The Fourier transform is a generalization of the complex Fourier series in the limit as period goes to infinity. (Wolfram MathWorld) The original signal can be restored in two ways. (i) Use the information such as frequency, amplitude and phase contained in the Foruier transform of the original signal. (frequency domain) (ii) Take the inverse Fourier transform of the Fourier Transform (time domain).
